Pamper Yourself with a Raw Honey Facial Mask

Having a beautiful complexion doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. There are many natural ingredients you can use that will give you the same – and sometimes better – benefits of expensive, chemical-filled commercial skin care products. One of the best and most versatile of these is raw honey.

Raw Honey Facial Masks

The use of honey as a facial skin treatment dates to ancient Egypt. Cleopatra reportedly used honey to maintain her legendary beauty. Alone or combined with other natural ingredients, honey can be used to treat specific skin conditions such as acne and blackheads, aging dry skin, and sunburn. It is important, however, to use raw honey in your skincare regimen. The honey you purchase in most grocery stores has been heat processed, which kills off many of the enzymes and nutrients that benefit your skin.

Raw honey has many properties that make it perfect for natural facial masks. It falls within the skin’s healthy pH range, as well as having natural antibiotic and antiseptic properties that kill bacteria. It also acts as a humectant, attracting moisture to your skin and keeping it there. Finally, raw honey contains anti-oxidant properties to protect your skin from the sun’s damaging rays and a mild alpha-hydroxy that brightens and evens your skin tone.

A Few Tips for Raw Honey Facial Masks

Masks are more effective if you prepare your face properly before applying them. Cleanse your skin thoroughly using a gentle cleanser to make sure that you have removed all traces of dirt or makeup. A good natural cleanser that also exfoliates dead skin cells is one teaspoon of virgin olive oil combined with two teaspoons of sugar. Combine to make a thick paste, then rub over your face and neck, and rinse well with warm water. A cotton ball or pad saturated with olive oil also makes an effective natural eye makeup remover.

For acne treatment, it helps to take a hot shower or bath first. This will open your pores and allow the antibacterial properties of honey to get inside and help unclog them.

Quick and Easy Raw Honey Facial Recipes

We’ve put together four raw honey facial recipes that you can prepare in just minutes.  These facial masks cover just about any skin type or condition but don’t limit yourself to just these four!

Simple Honey Facial Mask for All Skin Types

1.  Smooth 1-2 tablespoons of raw honey over face and neck, avoiding the eye area, and leave for 15-20 minutes.

2.  Rinse well with warm water.

Moisturizing Honey Facial Mask for Dry Skin

1.  Combine 1 tablespoon of raw honey with 1 teaspoon olive oil and 1 whole raw egg.

2.  Spread on face and neck, avoiding the eye area, and leave for 15-20 minutes.

3.  Rinse well with warm water.

Cleansing Honey Facial Mask for Acne and Blackheads

1.  Mix 2 tablespoons of raw honey with 1 teaspoon lemon juice and ¼ teaspoon cinnamon until it makes a smooth paste.

2.  Massage the paste gently into the face and neck, avoiding the eye area.

3.  Leave on for 15-20 minutes, and then rinse with warm and cold water alternatively.

Note: This mask can also be used on the chest and back if acne is a problem there, and as a spot treatment for an individual pimple.

1.  To spot treat, apply to the area, cover with a bandage, and leave overnight.

2.  Rinse well in the morning.

For severe or stubborn breakouts, add two finely crushed aspirin to the mix. The salicylic acid in aspirin is the main ingredient in most commercial acne treatments, so use it sparingly because it can over-dry or irritate your skin.

Cooling Honey Facial Mask for Sunburn

Make up a double batch of this in the summer and store for those times you get a little too much sun - it is wonderful for your face, but can be used on other sunburned areas also.

1.  Whip 1 whole egg until frothy.

2.  Warm ½ cup of coconut oil just until melted.

3.  Add the coconut oil and 1 tablespoon of raw honey to the whipped egg and blend until creamy.

4.  Pour in a small square or rectangular container (a plastic butter dish lid works great) and freeze for at least 4 hours - overnight is best. The cream will have a thick, waxy texture when frozen.

5.  Cut off a small chunk equal to about 1 tablespoon and rub gently over your face.

6.  Leave on for 10-15 minutes, and then rinse with warm water.

7.  Splash skin with cool water after rinsing and pat dry gently.

*Extra cream can be stored in the freezer for later use.

For the greatest benefit, make your raw honey facial mask a spa treatment. Try to schedule it when you have time to yourself. Lie down in a quiet room or play soothing music. Place chilled cucumbers or green tea bags over your eyes and relax while your mask works it magic. Your facial should be a stress-reducing time that will benefit not only your body, but your mind.

Warning: Raw honey and other natural ingredients can contain substances that may irritate your skin if you are sensitive to them. If you have allergies, check with your doctor before using any of the ingredients in these masks.
